Redirect/Forwarding Differences
Each method has a purpose and using each at the appropriate times can ensure that you receive the proper email header information, and eliminate any risk of send failures.
More details are below, but the key ideas of each functionality are the following:
-
Redirect:
-
Points the original email to a new recipient - maintaining the original sender’s information.
-
-
Forward:
-
Sends a copy of the original email from the original recipient (1) to another recipient (2).
-
Redirect
Using the diagram above, you can see the following:
-
There are multiple forms of redirect rules, server-level, and inbox-level rules. More information of those below.
-
The From and Subject of the original sender is retained across all recipient mailboxes.
Server Rule Redirect
This will process the redirect at a level before the original recipient’s inbox. Therefore…
-
The original recipient does not receive emails they may not care to have.
-
Potential Risk: The original recipient will not have a copy of the email for auditing, or recovering, purposes.
Inbox Rule Redirect
This will process the redirect using a rule after the recipient’s inbox receives the email.
-
The original recipient’s inbox might have excessive emails.
-
The original recipient will have a copy of the email for auditing, or recovering purposes.
Forwarding
Using the diagram above, you can see the following:
-
Fromwill change from Sender->Recipient 1
-
Subject will have FW: appended onto it to indicate it is a forwarded copy.
